Introduction to Disaster Response teaches learners how to help their communities during emergencies. This course prepares responsible citizens who can make a positive difference when their communities need help most. The focus of the course is on volunteer efforts through Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT). Students will see how volunteers assist professional first responders during disasters. The course covers important skills like basic first aid and fire safety, as well as search and rescue basics. Learners will create family escape plans and build emergency supply kits. They will also investigate how to recognize hazardous materials and will survey psychological first-aid techniques and terrorism awareness. Students will explore career opportunities in emergency management, firefighting, and disaster response. As they complete Projects and simulations, they will develop the knowledge and confidence to help others during natural disasters and other emergency situations.
