The Short Stories course invites students to explore powerful narratives that capture the essence of human experience in compact form. Through classic tales like “The Most Dangerous Game,” “The Necklace,” “A Retrieved Reformation,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” students develop critical reading skills while examining universal themes of survival, materialism, redemption, and psychological disturbance. Students will analyze literary elements, including plot, character, setting, theme, symbolism, irony, and foreshadowing. They will learn to identify explicit and implicit meanings, cite strong textual evidence, and craft compelling argumentative and explanatory essays. By the end of this course, students will appreciate how skilled authors create unforgettable stories that continue to resonate with readers across time and cultures.
