Description:
The Arkansas History course presents a study of the state’s fascinating past as well as its cultural, economic, and political evolution. Beginning with Native American origins, students survey early Spanish and French exploration, statehood, the Civil War, and the modern era. They explore pivotal moments in the state’s narrative, including the Arkansas Territory’s formation, the Trail of Tears, the Brooks-Baxter War, and the 1927 Mississippi River flood. Students view the influence that Johnny Cash, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and others have had on American culture. They identify prominent political figures including Robert Crittenden, Bill Clinton, and Daisy Bates. Students also see how Sam Walton, Don Tyson, and other entrepreneurs used the free enterprise system to build world-class businesses in Arkansas.
