The African American Studies course surveys and analyzes the experiences and contributions of African Americans throughout history, traced from cultural origins in Africa. Students develop a deeper appreciation for African American history, culture, and accomplishments. Students discover African American art, literature, music, theater, sports achievements, and political movements. Students learn about African Americans’ ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality, beginning with enslavement and arrival in America, as well as current issues such as police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement. Students examine the roles of race, gender, and class in shaping the experiences of African Americans and their role in American society.
