1st Grade Phonics teaches students how to read, write, and spell. This course explicitly and systematically teaches the letters, sounds, and patterns of the English language. Throughout the first four Units, students will acquire automaticity of 72 different phonograms by continually reviewing them through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition to phonogram introductions and reviews, each Lesson includes a phonological awareness activity and a reading activity. Throughout the following six Units, students will learn how to spell 180 words by applying their knowledge of phonograms and by learning foundational spelling rules. In each Lesson, students will continue to review the phonograms and practice reading one and two-syllable words. This course has 25 accompanying Readers that align with the phonograms and spelling words. The first seven Readers are 100% decodable using the phonograms taught. The next 18 Readers are mostly decodable but also introduce common tricky words such as of, said, and give.
