In 1st Grade Language Arts, learners develop skills for speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In Unit 1, learners are introduced to basic story elements, such as characters and events, as well as essential comprehension skills, such as making predictions and inferences. In Unit 2, learners begin focusing on individual words by discussing poetry and learning about nouns, verbs, and adjectives. In Units 3-6, learners deepen their literary knowledge and skills by exploring the genres of personal narratives, folktales, fairy tales, and fables. They will listen to a variety of literature, including fun, classic pieces such as “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” and “Pinocchio”. Learners will use these texts as mentors as they learn more about grammar and write their own stories. In Units 7 and 8, learners discover informational and persuasive texts. They will learn about text structures and organizational patterns while also learning about careers and hobbies. They will begin their own journey of inquiry, learning how to research and compile notes into an informational text. In Units 9 and 10, learners revisit everything they have learned as they read a variety of topically linked texts. Unit 9 is all about earth and space with a review of poetry, stories, and informational texts while also introducing learners to other mediums such as art and digital texts. Unit 10 is all about plants and animals with a focus on the author’s purpose of literary texts, informational texts, and persuasive texts.
